On 3 June 2024 Baron Waqa began his tenure as the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the development and prosperity of the Pacific region.
Born in Boe, Nauru, Baron Waqa has dedicated his life to public service.
Educational Background and Early Career
Baron Waqa holds a Masters of Education Policy and Administration from Monash University – Clayton and a Bachelor of Education from the University of the South Pacific. His early career saw him passionately engaged in the field of education, where he served as a teacher and an education official. His dedication to improving educational standards in Nauru laid the foundation for his future roles in governance and public administration.
Political Career
Baron Waqa's political career began in earnest when he was elected to the Parliament of Nauru in 2003. He served in various ministerial roles, including as Minister of Fisheries, and Minister of Education and Youth, where he championed reforms and initiatives aimed at strengthening Nauru's socio-economic fabric.
In 2013, Baron Waqa was elected as the President of Nauru, a position he held until 2019. During his tenure, he focused on sustainable development, economic diversification, and strengthening international partnerships. His Presidency was marked by efforts to improve the quality of life for Nauruans through infrastructural development, healthcare improvements, and educational advancements.
Baron Waqa championed the priorities of the region as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum from 2018 to 2019, Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) from 2013 to 2015, and Chair of Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) from 2013 to 2019. Baron Waqa was also Chair of the Commonwealth Secretariat Observer Group to the Papua New Guinea 2022 General Elections.
Baron Waqa has received the Order of Brilliant Jade from Taiwan/Republic of China and the Order of the Star of Italy - Grand Officer.

Personal Life
Baron Waqa is married to Louisa, and is a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is an avid supporter of initiatives that celebrate and protect the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Islands.
