Distinguished Guests

Colleagues, and Friends

Kamorale and good evening - It is my privilege to welcome you to the Secretariat to celebrate the 39th Independence Day of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Indeed, this occasion is a proud and meaningful moment for the people of FSM, and our entire Pacific family.

Since joining the Pacific Islands Forum in 1987, the FSM has been a committed and influential member of our regional community.

FSM has hosted the Forum Leaders Meeting three times—in 1991, 1998, and 2016 - each time showcasing its unique perspectives and inspiring leadership.

FSM’s contributions have consistently reflected a deep commitment to regional unity, climate resilience, and inclusive development. From the early calls for stronger cooperation and aid coordination in the 1991 Forum, to the emphasis on private sector growth and investment in 1998, and the landmark decisions in 2016 on climate action, disability rights, and ocean governance - FSM has helped shape the Forum’s agenda in ways that continue to benefit our region.

The Pohnpei Ocean Statement and the Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific, both endorsed during FSM’s 2016 chairmanship, remain guiding documents in our collective efforts to address climate change and protect our shared ocean.

In 1991, President Bailey Olter reminded us that “our Pacific Ocean does not separate us - it brings us together.” That sentiment continues to resonate, especially as we navigate complex global challenges that demand unity and cooperation.

As we mark this special occasion here at the Secretariat, we recognise and celebrate not only FSM’s independence, but also your spirit of unity and solidarity that underpins our enduring partnership and shared purpose.

On behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, I extend warm congratulations to the Government and people of FSM - May your journey of independence continue to flourish, and may our partnership grow ever stronger through connection, community, and cooperation.

Tūbwa Kor, I thank you.
