- RELEASE: Pacific Islands Forum To Observe Nauru’s National Elections
10 October 2025, Suva, Fiji - The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) has sent an Election Observer Mission to Nauru to observe the country’s National Elections on 11 October 2025.
Nauruan voters will go to the polls to participate in two democratic processes: the General Election to elect new members to their Parliament, and a national referendum on proposed constitutional amendments.
Led by Mr Darren Tohovaka, Secretary of Justice, Niue and Ms Takiakia Maatia, Chief Electoral Officer, Kiribati Electoral Commission, and supported by the PIF Secretariat staff, the Forum Election Observer Mission emphasises the collective commitment of Forum Members to uphold democratic values, accountability, and transparent governance across the Blue Pacific Continent.
Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Baron Waqa, thanked the Government of Nauru for its invitation to observe the elections.
“Free and fair elections are the foundation of good governance and public trust,” said Secretary General Waqa.
“We commend Nauru for its commitment to transparency, accountability, and credible electoral processes that strengthen both national and regional democratic institutions.”
The PIF Election Observer Mission will monitor polling and counting on election day to assess their conduct against national legislation and regional and international standards for free and fair elections.
Forum Election Observer Missions are conducted under the Biketawa Declaration (2000) — the Pacific’s regional commitment to peace, good governance, and collective accountability.
