RELEASE: Forum SG Waqa attends Nauru’s 57th Independence Day Commemoration

(Yaren, Nauru) -- The Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Baron Waqa attended the fifty seventh Independence Day commemoration in Nauru today at the invitation of the President of Nauru, H.E David Adeang.

Nauru gained independence in 1968 and commemorates the day on 31 January every year.

“Our journeys to statehood although distinct have provided a sense of unity and responsibility for this region. Celebrating Independence days are important to our island nations and demonstrates the resilience of our people and reaffirms our relationship with our land and ocean."

SG Waqa paid a courtesy visit to the President and offered his message of congratulations and discussed strategic regional priorities and the upcoming engagements both at regional and international levels. 

“Nauru is a founding member of the Pacific Islands Forum and has played an instrumental role in leading a number of regional and global efforts over the years.  Today, we also commemorate these achievements."

The celebration is also being attended by Leaders and other high-level dignitaries, including the President of Kiribati, H.E. Taneti Maamau, the Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia, H.E Aren B. Palik, Marshall Islands’ Presidential Envoy and Senator H.E Daisy Alik-Momotaro, Senator H.E Denis Momotaro and Fiji’s Roving Ambassador to the Pacific Island Countries and Territories, and Fiji's non resident High Commissioner to Nauru, H.E William Toganivalu.
