Call for Expression of Interest for the Participation of a Pacific Micronesian Subregion Youth at COP 29.
(PIF, through this Alliance, has supported engagement and participation of Polynesia and Melanesia youth at COP27 and COP28, respectively.)
Brief:
The purpose of this Expression of Interest (EOI) is to invite motivated and passionate Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Micronesia Subregion Youth to represent Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General’s Young Climate Leaders Alliance (PYCLA) and participate at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11 to 22 November 2024, actively engaging in discussions on the progress of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for Climate Finance and cross-cutting thematic area of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI).
The significant impact of climate change and predicted rise in greenhouse gas emissions until 2030 will put added stress on Forum Island Countries (FICs). This places an urgent need on the region to be innovative and develop measures to assist our members in accessing substantial and timely climate finance. Between 2010 to 2021, PSIDS received a total of USD 3.4 billion in climate finance predominantly as grants inclusive of bilateral and multilateral funds. Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations, the NCQG is a climate finance goal to succeed the existing goal of mobilising $100 billion per year by 2020 from developed to developing countries.
The 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent emphasises the critical role of youth representation in addressing climate change and decision-making. The 2050 Strategy through the thematic People-Centered Development, acknowledges the need to listen to and respond to the voices and aspirations of all Pacific peoples, including most importantly, our young people and children as they will be the ones inheriting the consequences of our actions.
The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) through the Secretary General’s Young Climate Leaders Alliance (Alliance) recognises that Pacific young climate leaders are already engaging actively and play a critical role as equal partners in addressing climate change. PIF, through this Alliance, has supported youth engagement and participation at COP meetings since 2021. At COP27 and COP28, Polynesia and Melanesia subregions youth representatives participated respectively.
For COP29, the PIF in close collaboration with the Pacific Youth Council (PYC) are working together to provide an opportunity to aspiring young Pacific climate leaders from Micronesia Subregion, to be at the climate negotiations to emphasise the urgency of accessing and mobilising Climate Finance and follow negotiations on Climate Finance and GESI to leverage climate finance and shape climate policies that would safeguard their future.
