The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) offers internship opportunities for university students and graduates who want to gain practical experience in a leading regional organisation. Internships provide exposure to policy development, legal research, and program implementation across PIFS’ work areas.

For USP Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP) students, PIFS offers priority placements during:
- April–May
- October–November
Important:
- Applications close six weeks before each block
- Early application strongly recommended
Internships are unpaid. Placements are limited to 2–3 students per block.
PDLP Internship Work
PDLP interns will gain practical experience in legal tasks connected to PIFS’ core work areas, including:
- Ocean Governance – supporting legal frameworks for maritime boundaries and sustainable ocean management.
- International Law – assisting with treaty depositary functions and compliance with regional agreements.
- Corporate & Institutional Governance – reviewing governance instruments and supporting decision-making processes.
- Trade & Economic Integration – contributing to legal aspects of trade agreements and regional economic frameworks.
- Climate Change & Resilience – supporting legal research on climate-related commitments and adaptation measures.
What We Look For
Applicants should:
- Be currently enrolled in USP’s PDLP
- Demonstrate strong academic performance and commitment to legal practice
- Be principled, professional, and able to work independently
- Show interest in regional and international legal issues
- Only nationals from a PIFS Member Country are eligible to apply
- Non-Fiji citizens require a valid immigration permit for the duration of the placement

- Submit application at least six weeks before April–May or October–November blocks

When Will You Hear Back?
We aim to notify successful PDLP applicants within three weeks of the start of the block. If you have not heard from us by then, your application was not successful.
Our general internships are open year-round and provide hands-on experience in areas such as:
- Regional Policy and Governance
- Trade and Economic Development
- Legal Services
- Climate Change and Resilience
- Communications and Public Affairs
- Corporate Services including Finance, Human Resources and Information Services
Interns are generally unpaid, but subject to circumstances, there may be transport allowance available. Placements are limited and highly competitive.
What We Look For
- At least two years of study toward a relevant degree (Journalism, Law, International Relations, Economics, Development Studies, etc.)
- Strong academic performance and a good record of achievement
- Principled, honest, and willing to work hard
- Non-Fiji citizens require appropriate immigration approvals
