Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke was appointed by His Majesty King Tupou VI as the 19th Prime Minister of Tonga on the 22nd of January 2025. He holds the Cabinet portfolio as Minister for Finance; Minister for Fisheries and Minister for Prisons.
A Tongan politician and former Cabinet Minister of the Government of Tonga, Hon. Dr Eke was elected by the Legislative Assembly on 24 December 2024, as the Prime Minister-designate, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku (Siaosi ‘Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni).
Hon. Dr Eke began his political career when first elected to the Legislative Assembly as the People’s Representative for Tongatapu 5 Constituency, at the General Election of November 2010, a seat he retained in three consecutive elections of 2010, 2014, and 2021, except in 2017.
In 2014-2017, Hon Dr Eke was appointed Minister of Finance and National Planning, during the Government administrations of the former Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano and the Late Prime Minister Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva.
Before entering politics, Hon Dr Eke was a career public service official, serving nearly two decades at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, as well as the Ministry’s Secretary for Finance. In 2013, he conducted an exploratory study on the quality of service in the public sector in Tonga and was involved in many projects to improve public sector reforms.
Dr Eke holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Southern Queensland, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Monash University in Australia, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Accounting and Economics from the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.
Dr Eke is a member of the Chartered Public Accountants (CPA) of the Australian Society of Accountants. He taught at the Tupou Tertiary Institute and was a professor and senior lecturer at the School of Management and Law, and of Christ’s University in the Pacific.
At the Coronation Investiture of His Late Majesty King George Tupou V in 2008, Dr Eke was honored with the rank of Commander of the Most Illustrious Order of Queen Salote III (Ko e Fakalangilangi Ma’olunga ‘o Sālote Tupou III).
He is from the village of Vaotu’u, western district of Tongatapu. He is married to Lusitania Latu Eke, and they have two children.
