Pacific Islands Forum strengthens cooperation with China

Beijing, 23 March 2017

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Dame Meg Taylor, met with the Chinese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, during her visit to Beijing this week where they discussed the strong and long standing relations between Pacific Island Countries and China. 

The Secretary General acknowledged the long history of people to people links and the importance of China as a partner for the Pacific Islands.  The Secretary General said she looked forward to strengthened leadership dialogue between the Forum and China. 

The Foreign Minister reiterated China’s commitment to working with the Pacific Islands Forum and with Pacific Islands Countries through the Pacific Trade & Invest office in Beijing on important issues such as climate change and support for economic development. 

He pledged financial support for the work of the Pacific Islands Forum through the China-PIFS Development Cooperation Fund.   

The Minister urged Pacific Island Countries to take up the opportunities offered by China’s Belt and Road strategy for economic and people to people cooperation and affirmed that China stood ready to support Pacific Island Countries who wish to take advantage of this initiative.

The Secretary General thanked the Minister for China’s generous assistance to the region including the PIF-China Scholarship Programme, which supports the future leaders of our region.  The Secretary General said that she looked forward to continued growth in cooperation between China and the Pacific Islands.
