The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) has congratulated Nauru President Baron Waqa on his re-election and re-appointment, the forum's Suva-based secretariat announced Friday.

"On behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, I convey to you our warmest congratulations on your re-election as the president of Nauru. The commencement of your second presidency reflects the confidence in your abilities as a leader by the people of Nauru, as well as your parliamentary peers," Dame Meg Taylor, secretary general of the PIF secretariat told Waqa in a congratulatory letter.

Taylor assured the government of Nauru of the PIF's firm and steadfast support and assistance.

"We stand ready to continue working with you and your government on the broad range of issues and challenges facing the Pacific that forum leaders addressed last year in Port Moresby and will be considering at your forthcoming meeting in the Federated States of Micronesia," she said.

Waqa was re-elected and sworn-in earlier this week, taking 16 of the 18 votes.
