The Trade Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan) presented financial assistance worth $US100,000 ($F212,719) to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) in Suva yesterday.

Head of mission Jeffrey Kau said the gift was the first installment of funds the country had announced last year to the regional organisation.

"Taiwan has been a development partner of the Pacific Islands Forum for over 20 years and over the 20 years we have worked very closely in various kinds of development co-operation projects," Mr Kau said.

"During this period, we have come to the conclusion that PIFS is one of the most important platforms in the region for us to engage with the people in this region and deliver our responsibility as a stakeholder in the international society.

"We had a new government last week and according to the new president, we are going to do more and engage in this region and with the assistance of the secretariat I am sure that we will do a lot more to assist people in this region."

PIFS acting secretary general Andie Fong Toy received the gift and thanked the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its continued support in development work in the region.

Ms Toy said the funding would assist the forum's smaller island states develop a strategy that ensured sustainable development for their people while recognising their unique vulnerability.
