Fiji has made positive progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals says the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

The Secretariat is tracking the progress of Forum island countries towards achieving the MDG’s.

The deadline for United Nations member states to meet the eight international development goals is the end of this year.

According to PIFS, Fiji is only on track to achieve four development goals, which is in primary education, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and ensuring environment sustainability.

Efforts in alleviating poverty, gender equality and combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS need to be strengthened.

Regional adviser Pacific Island Forum Secretariat Resina Katafono says only two Pacific Island countries, Cook Islands and Niue, are on track to achieve all the MDG’s Palau and Tonga are also on track to achieve four.

Talks on the post 2015 development agenda will get underway from next week.

The meeting will also look into including development goals that are not in the current eight MDG’s
