Good Leadership Expected Of Palau at 45th Pacific Islands Forum

Wednesday, 22 January 2014

Two officials from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) based in Fiji recently visited Palau for the Secretariat's first advance team meeting with Palau's Forum Organizing Committee members.

Palau is moving forward in taking necessary steps to host the 45th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting tentatively scheduled for late July this year. And a lot is expected of Palau as the new incoming chair of the Pacific Islands Forum.

"There will be expectations of the host government in terms of their leadership", said Desna Solofa, PIFS Director of Political Governance and Security Programme, in response to what is expected of Palau at the upcoming meeting. "Particularly with the President's leadership in taking the leaders through discussion of issues of regional importance and national interests.

Aside from the Pacific Islands Forum meeting hosted by Palau, this year another major regional and international conference is being held in Apia, Samoa -- the 2014 United Nations Conference on Small Island Developing States.

Solofa disclosed that the dates of both meetings have been advised to ensure participation, but generally there's an exception that all leaders will be attending the meeting in Palau.

Currently, Palau is working on organizing all of its committee groups responsible to organize and secure venues, food vendors, funding and other preparatory arraignments for the meeting later this summer.

In its role as the Secretariat for the Forum, Solofa expressed that the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat will help assist and prepare the incoming chair ahead of the leader's meeting in terms of providing briefings about national, regional and international issues.

However, the Secretariat is not responsible for monetary support for the meeting. Host government will need to secure all funds necessary to host a successful meeting.

The advance team is scheduled to make two additional visits to Palau to check on the process of its preparations before the meeting takes place in late July 2014.
