PRIVATE sectors contribute directly to the economic development of Fiji, says Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat economic governance director Shiu Raj.

Speaking at the two-day Pacific Path to Market workshop in Suva yesterday, Mr Raj said the event would help Pacific islands improve their exporting capabilities.

"It's initiated for the private sector exporters to gain more knowledge in terms of improving the capacity spots of products, goods and services to our key target market," he said.

Mr Raj said the workshop context would ensure the needs of various markets were met while helping participants understand how their products could fetch the best value in terms of branding, quality and relative competition.

Taveuni Organic Farmers Co-operative administrator Eremasi Lovodua said the workshop helped them understand their roles in the supply chain.

"From a farmer's point of view, this exercise has been a fact-finding experience. I see how I can get farmers representation on the market locally and overseas because at the end of the day we want a fair price for our members," he said.

"This workshop is really beneficial to us in trying to consolidate a group of growers to expose us at all levels so that we can get a fair value of our produce."
