Tobacco and junk food to be targeted in Pacific health campaign

ABC Radio Australia:

Tuesday, 15 July 2014

Up to three quarters of all deaths in the Pacific are caused by non-communicable diseases.

Pacific Island nations have some of the worst rates of diabetes and obesity in the world, and other risk factors such as smoking and drinking are high.

Health and economic ministers of the the Pacific Islands Forum nations met last week to tackle the issue.

They agreed to an N-C-D roadmap that would crackdown on tobacco and junk food, and improve early prevention methods.

Shiu Raj, the Director for the Economic Governance Program at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat, says the Pacific is facing a crisis, and will get worse without action.
