The Forum Secretariat says it is pleased with progress made this week by Pacific ACP countries ahead of their Economic Participation Agreement (EPA) negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Andie Fong Toy, Forum, Deputy Secretary General says officials and Trade Ministers were able to have robust and through discussion on the outstanding issues that needed to be negotiated with the EU.

“The level of engagement by officials and ministers has been very heartening. It shows to us their real commitment and interest to conclude an EPA as soon as possible,” Fong-Toy said.

It is also understood the Pacific ACP countries have written to the EU, following the conclusion of the meeting yesterday, requesting an EPA negotiation meeting at an official level at month end.

And she has also assured the Forum’s full support to assist the members in their preparation ahead of the meeting. “Our role is always to support the members,” Fong-Toy said.

“Our role is to assist the members with their preparation now that we have a very clear direction and decision from ministers.

“It is our wish and intention that the negotiation meeting at the official level takes place as soon as possible."
