McCully leads regional ministerial group to Fiji

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Murray McCully will lead a Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG) to visit Suva for two days.

The group arrives today and will meet with representatives of the Fiian government and a range of stakeholders.

A statement from PIFS says the MCG has been mandated by Forum Leaders to continue dialogue and engage with Fiji including supporting her return to parliamentary democracy.

Other members of the contact group are Vanuatu’s Deputy Prime Minister, Edward Natapei, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister, Rimbink Pato, Tuvalu’s Foreign Minister, Taukelina Finikaso and Samoa’s Communications Minister, Tuisugaletaua Ali’imalemanu Sofara Aveau.

McCully is the chair of the MCG.

Fiji has been suspended from the Forum since May 2009 after the Laisenia Qarase-led government was removed from office in December 2006.
